| The Rectors of St Chrysostom's |
| There have been twelve Rectors of St Chrysostom's Church since its foundation in 1877. 1. Revd William Marsden from 1877 to 1899 Fr Marsden was the first and longest serving Rector of St Chrysostom's. After curacies at St Catherine, Tranmere, Burnage, and St James, Birch, he became Rector of St Chrysostom's in 1877. He died whilst still Rector in 1899. 2. Revd John Bernhard Steinlen Barratt from 1899 to 1911 Fr Barratt came to St Chrysostom's having served in Blackburn diocese. he left St Chrysostom's to go to be Vicar of St Augustine's, Pendelbury and subsequently served in Peterborough Diocese. 3. Revd Clive Robertson Pattison Muir from 1911 to 1924 Fr Muir served in Durham Diocese, and was Vicar of Halifax, and then Vicar of Carnforth becoming Rector of St Chrysostom's. He left to become Vicar of Epsom, and was subsequently a Canon of Guildford Cathedral. 4. Revd Benjamin Pollard from 1924 to 1928 Fr Pollard came to St Chrysostom's from Yorkshire, he left to become Vicar of Lancaster. He was subsequently Bishop of Lancaster and later Bishop of Sodor and Man. 5. Revd Roland Harry William Roberts from 1928 to 1932 Fr Roberts had been Vicar of Peel, before taking up his appointment at St Chrysostom's. He was subsequently Vicar of Burton in Winchester Diocese and later Chancellor of Truro Cathedral. 6. Canon William Preston from 1932 to 1953 Canon Preston came to St Chrysostom's from St Clement's, Chorlton, he served at St Chrysostom's until his retirement. 7. Revd Robert Eric Charles Browne from 1953 to 1959 Originally from Northern Ireland, Fr Browne served as a priest in North and South Ireland, before working in London and Manchester dioceses. He was the author of the influential book The Ministry of the Word which was written during his time at St Chrysostom's. He retired through ill health in 1959, and lived in Fallowfield, Manchester. 8. Revd Charles Challen from 1960 to 1968 Fr Challen began his ministry in London diocese and then worked in Western Australia and then returned to England to work in Sheffield. He retired in 1968 and moved to Llanrwst. 9. Revd James Wardle-Harpur from 1968 to 1975 Fr Jim worked in Sheffield diocese and in Pakistan before coming to St Chrysostom's. He later worked in Leicester diocese, and retired to Skipton in 1996. 10. Revd Ian Deighton Corbett from 1975 to 1980 Fr Ian was Chaplain of Bolton College before become Rector of St Chrysostom's. He later worked in Africa, Ireland, and with Native Americans in Canada and Navajoland before retiring to England. 11. Revd Michael James Gervase Melrose from 1980 to 1994 Formerly Curate at St Peter, Pimlico. Fr Michael moved from St Chrysostom's to St Giles, Reading, he died in 2009 whilst still Rector there. Between 1996 and 1998 the parish was served by a part time priest, Revd John Tomlinson. 12. Revd Ian Douglass Gomersall from 1998 Fr Ian was ordained in Durham Diocese and has worked in parish, prison and university ministry. Initially appointed as part time parish priest of St Chrysostom's and part time University Chaplain his appointment was later changed to be Rector of St Chrysostom's (full time) and honorary chaplain to the universities. |
